Amabie Traditional T-shirt

In Stock | Ships from USA

A Manga University x Yukari exclusive

Amabie is a traditional Japanese yōkai (spirit) that uses its power to ward off disease and, as noted in such prestigious publications as Smithsonian Magazine, has become a modern symbol of the fight against the coronavirus.

In this hand-drawn design, Amabie sits underneath a holy Shinto gate adorned with the ancient phrase "Ekibyō Taisan," words that are spoken to eradicate a plague. Amabie is holding a 21st-century symbol of disease prevention, a face mask.

The first Amabie appeared in woodblock illustrations during Japan's Edo Period (1603-1868), when pictures of the spirit were shared and displayed in homes and businesses to keep disease at bay.

This Manga University exclusive T-shirt features original artwork by Japanese artist Yukari, whose work has been featured in galleries throughout Tokyo, including an upcoming exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
