Ronald A. Morse: Thoughts on Japan in the American Mind
Free eBook download
Thoughts on Japan in the American Mind examines the long life and career of Ronald A. Morse, whose expertise in Japanese studies won him appointments with the U.S. Defense, State, and Energy Departments; an assignment as special assistant to the Library of Congress; and professorships at universities on both sides of the Pacific.
To students and scholars of Japanese folklore, Morse is perhaps best known for his translation of Yanagita Kunio's classic The Legends of Tono (遠野物語) and the companion volume Folk Legends from Tono: Japan's Spirits, Deities, and Phantastic Creatures.
Since his retirement in 2005, Morse has been involved in new studies of Japanese folklore and regional development in Japan. He was awarded the Iwate Prefecture, Tono City Cultural Prize for these efforts in November 2012.
